This document explains how to use our IPNetRouter Configuration Application to simplify IPNetRouter setup. IPNetRouter configuration should permit you to use your Macintosh to do internet sharing with other computers on your local LAN. Some items before getting started:
- You only need to run IPNetRouter on ONE machine. This machine is your "gateway" machine and serves as a gateway to the Internet for all your other machines.
- Your other machines are called "clients" or "slaves". These machines (other Macs, Windows/PCs, Linux boxes, etc.) are setup as if they were directly connected to the Internet. The applications on these machines do not need to be changed. IPNetRouter is a Network Address Translation (NAT) router and NOT a proxy server. You DO NOT setup any applications to use a Proxy Server with IPNetRouter.
- You should already have your gateway and client machines networked. This means that they should be connected via Ethernet, LocalTalk, Wireless, etc.
Please read this document before attempting to use the Config App to setup internet sharing on your network.

What is required
Ñ IPNetRouter 1.5 or later must be installed (but not running).
Ñ A popular internet browser (either Netscape Navigator/Communicator or Internet Explorer).
Ñ A direct Internet connection on the target Macintosh.
Note: This configuration application will not work behind a firewall (NAT) or a VPN. You should configure manually in that case. Manual configuration is outlined on our web site starting at
1. Download and install the IPNetRouter Configuration Application on the machine on which you will be running IPNetRouter. We recommend that you move this application to the same folder as the IPNetRouter application, although this is not necessary.
2. Connect to the internet. Launch your browser. Run the Configuration Application. You should see a window with three buttons. The first button (circled in red) should have a small Mac icon with a blue upload arrow. If not...
3. Make sure you have a browser running. Then click the button circled in red and follow the directions as presented in your browser. That should do it!
This entire process is automated and typically takes about 5 minutes to complete.
Using the Config App
1. Open the IPNetRouter Configuration Application and click the first button circled in Red. This transmits port information to our server and takes your browser to a web page customized for your configuration. (Note, if you have an IP address that our web configurator thinks is behind a firewall or VPN, a message to that effect will appear in your web browser. If this error occurs, try manual IPNetRouter configuration as outlined on our website.)
2. In your internet browser, answer the questions about your Internet connection and your network LAN configuration. Depending upon your entries, we will present you with you a few more easy to answer options.
3. An IPNetRouter configuration file will then be downloaded to your Config App folder.
4. Check and/or modify your active TCP/IP control panel settings as described in the browser.
5. Configure your client machines as described in the browser.
6. Double-click on the configuration file download in step 3. This will launch IPNetRouter and configure your gateway Macintosh for internet sharing.
Important Note for PPPoE users (EnterNet, MacPoET, Sympatico PPPoE): You MUST first make your PPPoE connection before running IPNetRouter. We are working to resolve this issue.
